The Surprising Benefits of Cutting Back on Screen Time: A Parent's Perspective

So while I have been looking into screen time and the various impacts, I thought it might be an idea to share some of the findings here!

In a recent study published in JAMA Network Open, researchers found that significantly reducing children's leisure screen time can lead to notable improvements in their mental health and behaviour.

The study observed that children who limited their recreational screen time to just three hours per week exhibited fewer internalising symptoms—behaviours that are often hidden reactions to emotions and stress—and demonstrated better prosocial behaviour, which includes actions intended to benefit others.

These findings suggest that even modest reductions in screen time can have a positive impact on children's emotional well-being and social interactions.

It's important to note that the study focused on leisure screen time, separate from educational or necessary use.

While the average child currently spends seven to eight hours daily on screens for entertainment, this research highlights the potential benefits of moderating screen exposure.

As parents, considering these findings and striving for a balanced approach to screen time can contribute to our children's overall health and development.

With that said, let's disconnect to reconnect - catch you next time!
